Jason Whitlock may have a contract that pays him a higher hourly wage if the stuff that he says on television is incredibly stupid. If that’s the case, then I take back everything I’ve ever said about the man because I, too, would be incredibly stupid on television for money. I’m fairly stupid for free at home. If that is not the case, however, then his claim that Drew Brees winning another Super Bowl would have him supplant Peyton Manning on the list of greatest quarterbacks ever is just insane.
Yes, last season Brees passed Manning’s record of all time yards passing. He did that in Sean Payton’s pass happy offense however, and with the stability of a single talented coach for much of his career. The stats of the two players on paper are nearly identical, but Manning was more dominant at his peak, throwing for a record 55 touchdowns in 2013 and nearly hitting 5500 yards. Drew Brees best year ever was 46.
Manning was also the first quarterback to go to a second team in the Broncos and win a Super Bowl after winning one with his original team. He also carried some pitiful Colts teams into the playoffs, a fact highlighted by the team’s 2011 2-14 record while Manning was injured that ultimately allowed them to draft Andrew Luck and replace Manning.
Brees is a great quarterback and another Super Bowl would definitely be a feather in his cap, but Manning is clearly the better of the two.
